Simplicity was vital throughout the decade for both eveningwear and daywear. Two years later, waistlines began to rise again. At the same time, hemlines started to rise in 1926. Styles became progressively shorter throughout the decade, and preferred fabrics also became lighter.Ĭoco Chanel and other designers led the way as waistlines began to drop in 1923. Women won the right to vote in 1920, but they also voted in their own homes to ditch the formality of the many layers of clothes that they wore in their own homes and out in public.
